Alabama Back Institute Performs First Centinel Spine
Lumbar Disc Replacement in Birmingham Area
Prodisc® Total Disc Replacement (TDR) Technology Offers a Surgical Alternative to Spinal Fusions

(Surgical Team at Walker Baptist Hospital)
Jasper, January 13, 2025 – Dr’s Matthew Prevost, MD, and Mark Prevost II, MD board-certified and fellowship trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons with Alabama Back Institute, are on the forefront of cutting-edge technology advancements in motion-preservation procedures of the spine. They recently performed the first Lumbar Total Disc Replacement in the Birmingham area, and one of the first in all of Alabama, using Centinel Spine’s prodisc® L Total Disc Replacement (TDR) technology.
The area’s first prodisc® L procedure was performed at Walker Baptist Hospital in Jasper, Alabama on a 34 year-old female who was suffering from Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), axial back pain, and some radicular symptoms at the L5-S1 level. The surgeons recognized the patient as Lumbar Total Disc Replacement candidate which allowed them to maintain motion in the affected area, as opposed to a conventional Lumbar Fusion.
Traditional surgical intervention for the spine may include fusing spinal segments together, which permanently joins two vertebral bodies, eliminating movement between them. A Total Disc Replacement (TDR) offers a surgical alternative, where the damaged intervertebral disc is removed and replaced with an artificial implant. This technology works to relieve pain in patients suffering from a degenerated spinal disc while enabling motion over the long term1 at the diseased spinal segment and reducing adjacent-level degeneration and re-operations2. With Centinel Spine, the only United States provider of BOTH Cervical and Lumbar Total Disc Replacement devices, and their prodisc® line of implants (prodisc® C, prodisc® C Vivo, prodisc® C SK, and prodisc® L), the Surgeons at Alabama Back Institute now have options to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients.
While the majority of my patients can return to an active and pain free lifestyle through conservative care methods, a small percentage of them require surgical intervention. This minimally invasive procedure has allowed my appropriate patient candidates the opportunity to maintain motion in the affected segment with excellent long-term results,” stated Dr. Matthew Prevost. “Having episodes of back and sciatic pain are very common for patients to experience at some point during their lives. For those patients who don’t respond to non-surgical means of managing their pain, disc replacement surgery can be a successful option.”
Dr. Mark Prevost II went on to say, “With the continual improvement in insurance coverage, more of my patients will be able to benefit from disc replacement technology, which enables motion in the diseased segments of the spine. By performing a lumbar disc replacement instead of a fusion, patients benefit from a much faster recovery and return to active life, while decreasing the likelihood of needing further surgeries.”
Centinel Spine’s prodisc® is the most studied total disc replacement technology in the world and has been validated with over 540 peer-reviewed published studies and over 250,000 implantations worldwide. It is the only TDR technology with multiple motion-preserving anatomic solutions, allowing the surgeon to Match-the-Disc™ to each patient’s anatomy for both cervical and lumbar total disc replacement.
In the Lumbar spine, the prodisc® L system received one-level FDA approval in 2006 and since 2020 is the only total disc replacement device in the U.S. approved for two-level use (between L3 and S1). The addition of angled device endplate designs allow for implant optimization depending on the spinal level being operated on, as well as maximizing lateral bending and axial rotation. Recent expanded insurance coverage for Lumbar TDR with the prodisc® L device has contributed to the patient’s ability to have this procedure.
For today’s patient looking forward to a speedy recovery to an active lifestyle, prodisc® is a powerful treatment option worthy of consideration for appropriate patients.
